What Can You Do to Best Market Your Business?

Updated: Oct 3

Marketing...It can be a pretty scary word, can't it? You know it's the make/break for your business, and yet you don't know where to start. We've been there, too! But the plain truth is that people won't hire your service or buy your product if you don't tell them about it.

At its base, that's what marketing is: telling people what you're selling.

One reason marketing seems scary is that it’s such a big topic! Where do you start? How do you come up with a clear and consistent strategy?

While there are many options to choose from, there are a few steps everyone should take when spreading the word about their business. Let’s dive in!

Create a business website

This can be a daunting task, and something definitely to put on the let's-procrastinate-about-this list! In our experience, breaking a job down into a step-by-step process instantly makes it less intimidating. So here's a list to get you started:

1. Choose a website builder

There are a lot of website builders out there—most of us have heard of the bigger names, like Wix and Squarespace. Many of these builders have free options that help you create a very functional website. In order to choose which website builder is best for your needs, here are some things to think about:

  • Do you want a lot of creative freedom with your website design?

  • Are you looking for a very simple, intuitive website builder?

  • How much customer traffic do you expect?

  • Will you be uploading a lot of videos and photos?

These are just a few questions you should ask yourself before you dive into the world of website builders. Here is a great article to help you decide what website builder is best for your business!

...the plain truth is that people won't hire your service or buy your product if you don't tell them about it.

2. Create your website

You’ve chosen your website builder, now you’re ready to tackle writing the content! You want your site to be well-structured and to the point, so your customers can move around with ease.

Deciding how to design your website is a fun challenge, and you want to make sure your business personality shines through! Are you detail oriented? Go for a design that is clean cut and meticulous. Are you an artist with a distinctive style? Build a website that puts it on display.

A. The Home page

This is your handshake with potential customers—it’s your chance to introduce yourself and show people what you have to offer. But keep it short! People should be able to read the entire Home page in about 10 seconds.

B. The About page

Tell your customers more about yourself and your product. If you’ve written the story of how your business got started, this is the perfect place to put it!

C. The Services or Products page

Here’s where your product really gets to shine! If you are selling service packages, write clear descriptions about what those services include. If you are selling handmade products, showcase them with high-quality pictures.

D. The Blog

People ask Google a lot of questions, and many of these are relevant to your business. Your blog is where you can answer these questions! The more consistent and relevant your blog articles are, the more likely Google's Search Engine Results Page (SERP) will feature your website!

E. The Contact Page

Tell visitors how to get a hold of you! Include your work hours, address, email, and phone number. Adding a google map link is a great idea—people can just click and get easy directions!

But a website isn't the only option for marketing. In fact, some businesses run almost all of their marketing on social media!

Start business Facebook and Instagram accounts

In this time of social media, we have so many free marketing options! Two great resources are Facebook and Instagram.

Facebook is similar to a website in some ways—you can include your business address, your story, pictures of your product and team, and any other details you’d like. Posting consistently on Facebook keeps people interested in what you’re up to.

Instagram is a great place to find followers, create relationships, and direct traffic to your website. You can also use the Instagram story feature to include your customers in the day-to-day running of your business!

Deciding how to design your website is a fun challenge, and you want to make sure your business personality shines through!

Write a newsletter

Another way to keep your customers updated on what’s happening with your business is a newsletter. Send one out every week or two, and keep your followers invested in your ongoing story! Ship your letter out via email, and feature it on Facebook and Instagram.

We are here for you!

Running a business is no cake walk—you make sacrifices every day to create the best product and experience for your customers. While marketing is necessary, it can be time-consuming and challenging.
